The basic insurance is mandatory in the Netherlands. The government determines what all insurance companies should cover under this insurance. The basic insurance premium does not depend on your age. Each basic insurance covers, among other things:

Children younger than 18 are co-insured for the basic and supplementary insurances. You don't pay premium for them. The excess doesn't apply to children younger than 18, however the statutory contribution sometimes applies. Do you or your partner have supplementary insurance? Your children will also receive the same supplementary package as the parent with the most extensive supplementary package.
The excess for 2018 is € 385. This means that you will need to pay € 385 before the basic insurance reimburses your medical costs. The excess applies per calendar year and only to the basic insurance. The excess doesn't apply to, among other things:
You can increase your voluntary excess for 2018 up to a maximum of € 885 for a lower insurance premium. However, you will pay a higher amount for medical costs.
