The basic healthcare insurance

The basic insurance is mandatory in the Netherlands. The government determines what is covered and is the same with each healthcare insurer. The basic insurance premium does not depend on your age. Each basic insurance covers, among other things:

  • General practitioner (GP)
  • Medical Specialists
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Patient transport
  • Obstetric care
  • Maternity care

Children younger than 18 don't pay premium

You do not pay premium or excess for children younger than 18. Sometimes you have to pay a personal contribution. Do you have a Basis Budget package? Your children will automatically receive the same package. Do you or your partner have supplementary insurance? Your children will also receive the same supplementary package as the parent with the most extensive supplementary package.

The excess

The excess for 2017 is € 385. This means that you will pay the an amount of € 385 first before the basic insurance reimburses medical costs. The excess applies per calendar year and only to the basic insurance.

  • General practitioner
  • Maternity care
  • Care for your child under 18

The higher the excess, the lower the insurance premium

You can increase your voluntary excess for 2017 up to a maximum of € 885 for a lower insurance premium. However, you will pay a higher amount for medical costs.

Frequently asked questions

You could say: if no further health care is needed (e.g. phystiohterapy or dental check-ups), then a basic insurance is enough. Take into account that unexpected cost are not covered by the basic insurance. For example, when you become ill abroad and brought back to the Netherlands.

This is a very personal choice. Find our Keuzehulp (in Dutch only) to help you simply determine the insurance that suits you best. It also helps you determine whether additional coverage is useful.
The basic insurance covers 18 treatments physiotherapy for those up to 18 years. Are you over 18, then the basic insurance doesn't cover physiotherapy. In most cases, physiotherapy is covered under the supplementary insurance. Find the complete reimburement for those over 18 in our overview (in Dutch only).
Contraception is only covered under the basic insurance when you are younger than 18 or on medical grounds. In all other cases, contraception is reimbursed under the supplementary insurance. You will find the reimbursement for contraception in the overview of benefits (in Dutch only).
In some countries medical costs are higher than in the Netherlands. With supplementary insurance, you are better insured against unexpected costs. In our overview of reimbursements (in Dutch only), you will find everything about reimbursements of costs made abroad.
